Our Story

Built for the way Minnesotans actually play.

Trail Crossing Retreat sits at 4118 County Road 8 in Moose Lake — a stretch of the Northwoods where the Portage River winds through the property and two of Minnesota's premier multi-use trails cross right at our doorstep: the Soo Line Trail and the Willard Munger State Trail. In summer, that means paddling, fishing, hiking, biking, and side-by-side riding. In winter, it means fresh grooming and a snowmobile trail just steps from your dome.

We're building a retreat that fits the landscape: four glass-front geodesic domes, each one private and fully self-contained, set into the pines with room to park the truck and trailer and ride straight out.

The Domes

Four domes. Every season. Your own space.

Each 26-foot Harmony dome — about 538 square feet under a 13-foot ceiling — is a heated, year-round rental for up to four guests — with its own full bathroom, kitchenette, heating and cooling, and a private gravel patio. No shared bathhouse, no neighbors through the wall.

Year-Round

Built for Minnesota Winters

An extreme-snow-load frame, closed-cell spray-foam insulation, and an insulated concrete slab with in-floor radiant heat keep each dome warm and quiet in January. An air recuperator keeps the air fresh and the glass clear.

  • In-floor radiant heat
  • Heat pump heating & AC
  • Arched glass front

Private

Everything Under One Dome

A full bathroom, a kitchenette for real meals, and sleeping for up to four. Step outside to your own 16×16 ft patio with a fire ring — the river and the pines are the only neighbors.

  • Sleeps up to 4
  • Full bath & kitchenette
  • Private patio & fire ring

Rider-Ready

Park It, Unload, Ride

Every dome has its own 20×20 ft gravel parking pad and walkway, with trailer parking on site. Unload the sleds or side-by-side and ride out to the Soo Line Trail — no trailering to a trailhead.

  • Private parking pad
  • Truck & trailer parking
  • Ride-in, ride-out access

Four domes open first. The property is planned for up to ten domes and a guest office with laundry over time — we'll add more as demand grows. Outdoor scenes above are artist's renderings of our domes on site.

Inside the Dome

Warm floors, big views, all the comforts.

Wake up to the pines through an arched wall of glass, then make coffee in your own kitchenette. The domes are heated, insulated, and built for four seasons — the comforts of home under a Northwoods sky.

  • Arched glass front with French doors facing the woods
  • In-floor radiant heat in an insulated concrete slab
  • Kitchenette with sink, fridge, and prep space
  • Full bathroom with shower
  • Heat pump heating and AC, plus fresh-air ventilation
  • About 538 sq ft under a 13-foot geodesic ceiling, sleeping up to four

Trail Access

Two trails cross here. Every season.

The property sits at the crossroads of the Soo Line Trail and the Willard Munger State Trail — two of Minnesota's premier multi-use corridors — with no trailering required. Ride out, ride back.

Winter · Snowmobile

Groomed access to hundreds of miles of interconnected Northland trails via the Soo Line corridor. Ride out from your dome and back again.

Summer · ATV & Side-by-Side

Direct trail-legal access for ATVs, UTVs, and side-by-sides. Paved Munger Trail on the east side is a favorite for biking, walking, and rollerblading.

Nemadji State Forest

Miles of designated OHV and snowmobile routes through the largest state forest in east-central Minnesota — connected directly to the trail system at our doorstep. Some of the best riding terrain in the region.

Rider-Friendly Stays

Bring your own sleds, ATVs, or side-by-sides. Truck and trailer parking on site, a gravel pad at every dome, and the trail a short ride away. Need a machine? We'll point you to local rental outfitters.

Year-Round · The River

Portage River frontage on-property. Paddle, cast, or sit at the bank — respect the shoreland, take it slow.

About

A Minnesota family business, built to last.

Trail Crossing Retreat is developed and operated by Trail Haven Ventures, LLC — a Minnesota company owned 50/50 by Thomas and Amanda Paull. We spent years riding, camping, and paddling the same land we're now building on, and we're designing every inch of the retreat to fit how people actually use the Northwoods.

We work closely with Carlton County, the Minnesota Department of Health, and licensed local trade partners to build responsibly, protect the river corridor, and meet every Minnesota standard for lodging operations.

  • Owner-operated — you're talking to the people running the place.
  • Locally built — Carlton County contractors and MN-licensed trades.
  • Permitted to build — Carlton County Conditional Use Permit granted; MDH lodging license and MN-licensed septic design in progress.
